Supporting the Newtown Community
Central Website Offers Opportunities to Donate or Volunteer

In solidarity, Newtown is committed to providing support and resources to the families impacted by last weeks’ tragic event. United Way of Western Connecticut, in partnership with the City of Newtown has established a system to accept the compassionate outpouring and support of the American people and people around the world. As people from our area and beyond respond to this heartbreaking tragedy, they are turning to United Way and other partner organizations looking for ways to help.

The outpouring generosity behind incoming donated goods is overwhelming may quickly overrun the capacity of the community to manage the goods.   Currently, children’s items, food and clothing supplies are arriving in abundance and sufficient.  The most useful form of assistance is donations of money.  Make check and credit card donations to well-established, charitable organizations that are assisting in Newtown, such as United Way and its partners.
The Town of Newtown is asking those wishing to support the community to consider the following items:

  • Monetary Contributions –Monetary donations will allow non-profit agencies working in affected communities to assist families in a more dignified manner, identifying exactly what impacted families may need.   Donations can also be made to specific agencies providing relief and recovery in affected communities, including United Way at

  • Non-Cash or In-Kind Donations/Food –
  • Unsolicited donated goods such as used clothing, food, miscellaneous household items, and mixed or perishable foodstuffs require helping agencies to redirect valuable resources away from providing services to impacted families, to sort, package, transport, warehouse, and distribute items that may not meet the needs of disaster survivors.
  • Confirm the needs by contacting the voluntary organization of your choice before starting to collect.
All donations will go a long way to help in the short and long term recovery efforts on behalf of the Newtown community.
